Garlic and Shallots

Shallots

When to Plant

Shallots are available in stores from May, and can be planted right through to spring

Where to Plant

Shallots can be planted in the vegetable garden provided they get a reasonable amount of sunshine each day.

The soil should be fertile and free draining. Improve heavy soils by the addition of compost or peat.

Shallots can also be grown in large troughs or containers.

Use ican organic Vege Food in the garden, and slow release Novatec in pots and containers.

Requirements

Plant in a sunny position, with well-drained soil

Add compost and/or peat prior to planting

Apply an all-purpose fertiliser as per packet instructions

How to Plant

-Divide into single bulbs before planting

-Press each bulb firmly into the soil, leave top ½ above the ground

-Space 10cm apart, 25 cm between rows

-Each bulb will produce 6-12 new bulbs

-Harvest when leaves wither back to the neck of bulb, in mid-summer

-Store in a cool airy place, tied on strings or in string bags

Pests and Diseases

The main issues effecting garlic and shallots are Aphids and Rust

If Aphids (black or green) are found, spray with Grosafe Enspray 99 or Yates Mavrik and ensure you follow instructions regarding repeat applications in order to break the Aphids breeding cycle.

Rust is an airborne fungal disease which is more likely to occur in warm, moist conditions. It presents as small circles of bright orange powder on the green stalk.

Apply Grosafe Freeflo Copper as a preventative or to stop it spreading. Ensure soil is well drained, there is plenty of air movement around the plants (ie don’t plant them too close together) and avoid overhead watering at night.
